Sefer Torah || סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה

What is סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה?

  • A סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה [the scroll containing the חֲמִשָּׁה חֻמְּשֵׁי תּוֹרָה] is written by a qualified scribe called a סוֹפֵר סת"ם.
  • He writes the סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה on scrolls of parchment using a feather and kosher ink.
  • The סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה is written in Hebrew with with a traditional calligraphic form of the alphabet which is called כְּתָב אַשּׁוּרִי.
  • The סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה is written in paragraphs, but with no full stops or punctuation marks.
  • The סוֹפֵר סת"ם is extremely careful to copy every word from an existing סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה so that every סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה is the same.
  • Even if a single letter is missing the entire scroll is invalid [פָּסוּל].
  • It takes between six months and a year to write a סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה.

כְּבוֹד סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה | Honor of Sefer Torah

The ספר תורה is the most holy object we have. Whenever the ספר תורה is removed from the ארון קודש, we kiss it and follow it to the בימה. We must dress it and adorn it with the finest velvet and silver (פרוכת) or Torah Cases. We must always stand up if a ספר תורה is removed from the ארון קודש.

The ספר תורה is the holiest treasure in our possession. Every single word in the תורה is Divine and is an exact copy of the very first ספר תורה written by משה רבינו.
