The אלף-בית has 22 letters and five אותיות סופיות (final letters). Every letter of the אלף-בית has a numerical value. That system is called גימטריה. From א to י the values of the letters increase by ones, from 1 to 10:א = 1ב = 2ג = 3ד = 4ה = 5ו = 6ז = 7ח = 8ט = 9י = 10From י to ק, the values of the letters increase by tens, from 10 to 100:י = 10כ = 20ל = 30מ = 40נ = 50ס = 60ע = 70פ = 80צ = 90ק = 100From ק to ת the values of the letters increase by hundreds, from 100 to 400:ק = 100ר = 200ש = 300ת = 400To write the numbers using letters, simply add letters of the correct values. For example, the numbers 10-20 are written as follows: יא = 11יב = 12יג = 13יד = 14טו = 15טז = 16יז = 17יח = 18יט = 19כ = 20Note: The numbers 15 and 16 are not made up by adding a ה and a י, for this would spell the name of Hashem, which we must not write unnecessarily as it may not be erased. Even in English, we hyphenate the word — G‑d.The numbers 21 to 30 are written as follows: כא = 21כב = 22כג = 23כד = 24כה = 25כו = 26כז = 27כח = 28כט = 29ל = 30With numbers over 100, simply add units: קי = 110רמח = 248שסה = 365With numbers over 400, add hundreds: תרמח = 648With numbers over 1000, write a letter with a dash: ה'תשמח = 5748ה'תשח = 5708It is also possible to convert words into numbers: הלל = 5+30+30 = 65שלום = 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376מתושלח = 40 + 400 +6 + 300 + 30 + 8 = 784The study of numerology, i.e. the numerical equivalent of words, is called גימטריה. |
