Gematria || גִּימַטְרִיָה || Numerical Values

The אלף-בית has 22 letters and five אותיות סופיות (final letters). Every letter of the אלף-בית has a numerical value. That system is called גימטריה.
From א to י the values of the letters increase by ones, from 1 to 10:
א = 1
ב = 2
ג = 3
ד = 4
ה = 5
ו = 6
ז = 7
ח = 8
ט = 9
י = 10

From י to ק, the values of the letters increase by tens, from 10 to 100:
י = 10
כ = 20
ל = 30
מ = 40
נ = 50
ס = 60
ע = 70
פ = 80
צ = 90
ק = 100

From ק to ת the values of the letters increase by hundreds, from 100 to 400:
ק = 100
ר = 200
ש = 300
ת = 400

To write the numbers using letters, simply add letters of the correct values. For example, the numbers 10-20 are written as follows:
יא = 11
יב = 12
יג = 13
יד = 14
טו = 15
טז = 16
יז = 17
יח = 18
יט = 19
כ = 20

Note: The numbers 15 and 16 are not made up by adding a ה and a י, for this would spell the name of Hashem, which we must not write unnecessarily as it may not be erased. Even in English, we hyphenate the word — G‑d.

The numbers 21 to 30 are written as follows:
כא = 21
כב = 22
כג = 23
כד = 24
כה = 25
כו = 26
כז = 27
כח = 28
כט = 29
ל = 30

With numbers over 100, simply add units:
קי = 110
רמח = 248
שסה = 365

With numbers over 400, add hundreds:
תרמח = 648

With numbers over 1000, write a letter with a dash:
ה'תשמח = 5748
ה'תשח = 5708

It is also possible to convert words into numbers:
הלל = 5+30+30 = 65
שלום = 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376
מתושלח = 40 + 400 +6 + 300 + 30 + 8 = 784

The study of numerology, i.e. the numerical equivalent of words, is called גימטריה.
